  • Practicing communication and interpersonal skills

What Types of Group Therapy Exist?

Group therapy is not one-size-fits-all. Group therapy in Maryland comes in a variety of offerings and is often tailored to different populations and goals.

1. Process-Oriented Therapy Groups

These groups focus on exploring emotions, relationships, and patterns of behavior in the here-and-now. They help participants deepen self-understanding and improve interpersonal effectiveness.

2. Skill-Building Groups (DBT-Informed, CBT-Based)

Great for teens and young adults who want to learn tools to manage emotions, reduce anxiety, or cope with depression. These groups often focus on practical strategies in a structured format.

3. Support Groups

These are designed for individuals experiencing similar challenges—such as grief, identity exploration, trauma, or chronic stress. Support groups offer shared experiences and mutual validation.

4. Parent Support Groups

Guided by a therapist, these groups help parents better understand their children’s mental health needs, develop effective parenting strategies, and find community with other caregivers.

We offer and can connect clients to several types of group therapy in Chevy Chase, Maryland, ensuring the group you attend aligns with your goals and needs.

How to Make the Most of Group Therapy

Starting group therapy can feel intimidating—but it’s also an incredible opportunity for growth. Here’s how to get the most out of the experience:

  • Show up consistently – Regular attendance builds trust and helps you integrate into the group

  • Be open – Vulnerability leads to connection. Share at your pace, but try to stay authentic

  • Respect others’ stories – Confidentiality, empathy, and nonjudgment create a safe environment for all

  • Practice active listening – You’ll learn just as much by listening as you will by sharing

  • Apply what you learn – Try new skills and insights outside of group and bring your reflections back

Our groups are designed to help you build skills, foster connection, and increase your self-awareness. Many participants find that group therapy in Maryland becomes a cornerstone of their healing journey.

Support Group for Parents of Neurodivergent Teens

Facilitated by Kelley York, LCSW. |Virtual | 2x/month | Mondays at 12pm ET

Parenting a neurodivergent teen can be both rewarding and exhausting—sometimes in the same hour. Whether your teen has a diagnosis of ADHD, Autism Level 1, or you're simply navigating a world that often doesn't make space for their needs, you deserve support too.

This twice-monthly virtual support group is for parents and caregivers of neurodivergent teens who are looking for connection, perspective, and space to be real. The group offers a mix of open conversation and guided facilitation from Kelley York, LCSW, a therapist with extensive experience supporting both adolescents and parents in the neurodivergent community.

Each 60-minute session creates space to:

  • Share challenges and successes without judgment

  • Connect with other parents who truly understand

  • Learn from group experiences and insights

  • Gain gentle guidance from a therapist who “gets it”

  • Explore parenting strategies that support regulation, flexibility, and connection

This is not a “how-to” class or a place to “fix” your child—it’s a supportive community that values curiosity over criticism and presence over perfection. Together, we’ll hold space for the mess and the magic of raising teens who experience the world differently.

The group meets virtually every other Monday at 12PM ET and is designed to fit into your life without adding extra stress. Whether you join regularly or drop in when you can, you’ll leave each session with a little more clarity, hope, and connection than you had before.
